Syzygy of the Tides

Through embodied field research, including 7 days and 7 nights spent living and sleeping at the mill, this work examines these alternative rhythms of existence. Tidal predictions, lunar phases, atmospheric measurements and personal sleep–wake data were collected and translated through computational processes into spatial and mechanical forms. Developed as part of S+T+ARTS Aqua Motion residency, in Viana do Castelo, Portugal.

372.5~ River Thames X Space House

Installed on the 15th floor of London’s iconic brutalist landmark, Space House, 372.5~River Thames is a kinetic sculpture that visualises the tidal rhythms of the River Thames. Presented ahead of Earth Day 2025, the piece translates real tidal data into a moving form, using an intricate system of pulleys and counterweights to echo the river’s natural ebb and flow.

Space House, with its panoramic 360-degree views, offers a rare vantage point from which the Thames can be seen meandering through the cityscape. At various moments throughout the day, the sun, and the moon can be seen — reinforcing the celestial forces that influence the tides and reminding us of our planet’s quiet, powerful rhythms.

Filmed over a 24-hour cycle, the sculpture becomes a canvas for light, shifting with the movements of the sun and moon across the sky. As the day progresses, the interaction between natural light and kinetic motion reveals an ever-changing interplay of shadow, form, and texture.
