Approaches to Play 1, Weekly Journal
Week 1
Thoughts on other things for my tool box, an old kite handle to control a game in stead of a typical game controller, this would change the whole experience for a player (ref Re-Pong)

Week 9
Olafur Eliasson uses maps of the earth viewed from different angles introducing different perspectives, deviating from those of the human. This creates new feelings of empathy and even guilt as the viewer sees the world through plants/animals/natures eyes.
Using perspective as a mechanical tool can evoke different emotions in players/audiences. The context of the game/art game/installation plays a big part in creating emotions…
What about using a map of the world for the game but not the typical map of the world, rotate is so that South America/Brazil is in the centre instead of Europe/Africa…could this grab the attention of the players more, instead of taking for granted the standard map of the world?
The players experience will be different if the play at home, in a park, at work, in a museum or science gallery. The same game won’t have the same feel played in each of these places. If players are playing in a public space this will have an effect too, will they engage with the other players, what will the interaction be like, cooperative, competitive, can they play alone while other players still play?
Lighting and sounds… Jan Willem Nijman changed the whole feel of a game by just turning the volume up! Lower volumes with low bass (acoustic versions) are often used to create feelings of nostalgia, melancholy, empathy, guilt (think climate change…)
Feedback for designing games with animals/humans
NB must be careful using humans/animals mechanically in games…effect on players if an animal/human DIE…alternative options…emotional impact? Meaningfulness

Week 10
See game documentation for full thinking process updates on game idea
…want game to be played in a science gallery or aquarium, WHY? Effect humans have had on the planet is tragic…want experience of the game to be longer lasting than playing a board game…want to create emotions of sadness, empathy and guilt, attempt to urge the audience to continue to combat climate change. evoke these emotions using light and sound, have the artgame installed in a darker room with an underwater feel…
From lecture/final project….
How to present the game, think how the experience will be shared/photographed/videoed
Deliverables for project: slideshow and video…
Slideshow: use blues/navys in keeping with the ocean colours
Typography for slideshow presentation-think back to Alan Zucconi’s video on Alan Turing, very appropriate for the video, old typewriter style font…font for this game should be clean and simple, not to distract from the message of the game…
Ideas for video sound track
Avril 14 (Aphex Twin) - Vanessa Wagner Version (look at album cover for colour palette ideas)
Swimmers, Zero 7 and Jem Cooke
Huldra, Gidge
Olsen, Boards of Canada
Transformation, Cinematic Orchestra
Arrival of the Birds,Cinematic Orchestra
Blurred, Kiasmos
Typography for video should be simple, no fuss. White over the darker blues of the game.
