SEE~TURTLES is an immersive, interactive installation that raises awareness about plastic pollution and its impact on marine life. Blurring the lines between human perception and ecological experience, the work invites viewers to step into an underwater world shaped by re-used plastic objects, responsive projections, and kinetic jellyfish.
Using computer vision and physical computing, the installation simulates how turtles might perceive plastic debris — often mistaking it for food. As viewers move within the space, their presence is detected by a webcam, triggering generative spirals projected across the installation. These spirals mimic the visual confusion marine animals face, while motion sensors activate LED lights and micro servos that animate the suspended jellyfish, made from found and repurposed plastics.
Playful yet poignant, SEE~TURTLES creates a sensory experience that prompts deeper reflection:
What do you see? What do you think turtles see?
By merging recycled materials with interactive technology, the piece continues O’Leary’s exploration of environmental systems, perception, and care ethics — asking us to reconsider the consequences of our waste through the eyes of another species.
